Visiting Glacier National Park in 2026? Read This.
What you need to know for Summer 2026 At glacier national park
Planning a summer trip to Glacier National Park? You picked an incredible year to visit. The park has made major changes to its entry system for 2026, and the good news is that visiting is much simpler than it has been in recent years.
Here’s everything you need to know before heading into the park so you can spend less time stressing and more time enjoying the mountains, lakes, wildlife, and Going-to-the-Sun Road..
The Biggest Change for Summer 2026: No Vehicle Reservations
For the first time in several years, Glacier National Park is not requiring vehicle reservations for Going-to-the-Sun Road or any other park entrance areas in 2026.
That means:
No timed-entry reservation lottery
No advance booking needed to drive into the park
More flexibility for spontaneous trips and day plans
This applies to:
Going-to-the-Sun Road
Many Glacier
Two Medicine
North Fork
You will still need:
A valid park pass or entrance fee
Lodging, camping, or activity reservations if staying overnight or booking tours
Important: The Park Can Still Limit Access
Even though reservation system is gone, Glacier is still expecting busy summer crowds. Park officials have said vehicles may be temporarily turned away or delayed when parking lots and roads become overcrowded — especially around Logan Pass and Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Translation: you can enter without a reservation, but arriving late in the day may mean:
Long entrance lines
Full parking lots
Delays at Logan Pass
Traffic backups on Going-to-the-Sun Road
Our #1 Recommendation: Start Early
The best Glacier experiences happen early in the morning.
During July and August, we strongly recommend:
Entering the park before 7:00 AM
Starting hikes early
Visiting Logan Pass before mid-morning
Benefits of an early start:
Easier parking
Cooler temperatures
Better wildlife viewing
Less traffic
More peaceful trails
If you prefer a slower morning, evenings after dinner can also be beautiful and less crowded.
Logan Pass Parking Changes in 2026
Glacier is introducing a new system for Logan Pass in 2026:
Limited timed parking
Expanded shuttle operations
Ticketed shuttle access in some areas
Parking at Logan Pass has always been one of the biggest challenges in the park, so visitors should expect:
Parking lots to fill early
Traffic congestion mid-day
Shuttle systems to become more important this summer
If Logan Pass is on your must-see list, plan ahead and go early.
Going-to-the-Sun Road Tips
Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the most scenic drives in North America, but it can also be one of the busiest.
A few important things to know:
The full road typically opens sometime between late June and early July depending on snowpack
Construction or weather delays can happen anytime
Cell service is very limited inside the park
Fuel stations are scarce
Before heading out:
Fill up your gas tank
Download offline maps
Bring water and snacks
Check road status updates before you leave
Wildlife Safety Is Serious Here
Glacier is true bear country.
Visitors commonly see:
Grizzly bears
Black bears
Mountain goats
Moose
Bighorn sheep
For a safe trip:
Carry bear spray on all hikes
Stay at least 100 yards from bears
Stay at least 25 yards from other wildlife
Never feed animals
Weather Can Change Fast
Even in July and August, Glacier weather can surprise people.
It’s common to experience:
Hot afternoons
Cold mornings
Wind at higher elevations
Sudden rainstorms
Snow at Logan Pass any month of the year
Bring layers:
Rain jacket
Fleece or sweatshirt
Hiking shoes
Sunscreen
Refillable water bottle
Popular Areas Fill Quickly
